About Me
Hello! My name is Catherine Buck and I am an Honors Student and Cincinnatus Excellence Scholar at the University of Cincinnati. I was born in Boston, Massachusetts and grew up in Loveland, Ohio. One of the most important things in my life is my family. I have two amazing parents, an older sister, a younger sister, and a younger brother, and they've always been my closest friends. I went to grade school at St. Columban School in Loveland, where I developed my Catholic faith. Before coming to the University of Cincinnati, I attended Mount Notre Dame High School, a small Catholic all girls school in Cincinnati. I loved my high school, and learned to explore my interests passionately, how to be a devoted student, and the importance of friendship. As the president of Model United Nations, French Club, and Ambassadors, as well as a member of Academic Team, National Honor Society, and several service organizations, I developed my leadership skills and an enthusiasm for helping others.
I am studying Neurobiology, and hope to attend medical school after I finish my undergraduate degree at UC. Ever since I was a little kid, I have always been fascinated with the idea of being a doctor. I'm intrigued by the idea that you can help to heal someone, take away pain, and even save lives. As I grew up and advanced more in my academic career, I realized that my passions really did lie in the field of science and medicine, particularly neuroscience. After my junior year of high school, I participated in a summer biomedical research internship program at the University of Cincinnati's College of Medicine. From this experience, I confirmed my focus on neuroscience and developed an interest in biomedical research. My dream is to be a neurosurgeon at a hospital on the East Coast. I also hope to do research in a laboratory, specifically in the area of neuroplasticity. I am inspired by the myriad of neurological diseases and conditions that, with the aid of technology and medicine, can someday be eradicated. My goal is to be on the forefront of this research, and leave my mark on the world of medicine. I'd also love to find a cure for Celiac Disease, because no matter what anyone tells you, bread made with rice four is not real bread. During my time at the University of Cincinnati, I hope to become in leader in the areas of my passions. I aim to graduate in the Honors Program, having much more than the required number of service hours, and having had many more experiences than when I first started my time at the University. I intend to push myself out of my comfort zone, whether that means taking a scary math class or travelling to the far corners of the globe. I am so excited for the next four years, so I hope you follow my adventures at UC! Update- June 2016 I just finished my sophomore year at UC! So far, I've already exceeded the required number of honors experiences, adding experiences in international travel, politics, literature, medicine, and research. I've traveled to France, the Netherlands, and Belgium. I've made three presentations to a scientific community on work I've done at Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, and am working on a fourth. I have been published in the journal Annals of Dyslexia with my mentor from the Biomed RAMP program. I have volunteered with the Bearcat Buddies tutoring program, working at Roll Hill School and the Ethel M. Taylor School, developing meaningful relationships with students and teachers along the way. I joined an honorary society for premedical students, a social sorority (of which I am the Parliamentarian), and a group called NeuroSociety. I have also become an Honors Ambassador. I go into more depth about my honors experiences in other pages of this site, links at the top of the page! Update- June 2017 Hi again! I've just completed my third year at the University of Cincinnati. This year, I've grown in leadership. I am the Academic Excellence Chair of my sorority, and we've moved in academic rankings from #6/ 10 to #3. I love working with the members of our chapter who need some help with their academics, and have been so proud of the progress our chapter and its individual members have shown. I had another awesome year doing Bearcat Buddies. I had the privileged of working with the same student for the entire year, and will be working with her next year as well at Roll Hill. I gained confidence in my tutoring skills, and was able to connect with my student on a deeper level, and help her through some issues she was having at home. Towards the end of the Spring Semester, I found out that I had been accepted as a Student Orientation Leader for the summer. This is a competitive program comprised of 35 students from all years, colleges, and majors who will welcome all incoming students to UC. I am in the middle of the program right now, but I'm already beginning to see myself become a better leader and more confident. I can't wait to experience the connections I will make with new students and their parents. |
