Intermediate Composition Honors Seminar Reflection
This past semester, I participated in the Honors seminar Intermediate Composition. In this course, I created a blog containing several pieces of writing completed throughout the semester. This course had an overarching theme of the media, particularly social media. Each piece completed in this course related back to this theme in some way. I was able to choose topics that were interesting to me, and investigate the role of media in this topic. These blog posts were then posted to a class discussion board. All students were placed in discussion groups, and read and responded to the posts of their group members. The in class discussions were the most meaningful portion of the class for me. I was able to discuss a variety of topics, including healthcare, politics, the 2016 presidential election, cultural diversity, and higher education, all through the lens of media, with a diverse group of students with an array of opinions. I learned a lot about my classmates, and gained new perspectives I hadn’t considered on a variety of issues facing modern society. This course helped me develop a voice on issues I hadn’t fully researched or considered, and allowed me to form concise and well thought out opinions. I then learned how to share these opinions with others, and how to both give and receive meaningful comments on these pieces of writing.
